Older People & Mobility Aids grant check
Updated 9 June 2026 · Reflects the revised scheme effective December 2024
Two grants run alongside the Housing Adaptation Grant, on the same form and the same councils. The Housing Aid for Older People grant pays for essential repairs in an older person's home, up to €10,700. The Mobility Aids Grant pays for simpler mobility works like grab rails, ramps or a stairlift, up to €8,000.
Answer three quick questions. We'll tell you which grant fits, what you could get, and give you the form to download.
This is not an official decision. Your local council makes the final call. The rules are public, so these numbers are the ones the council uses too.

Covers roof, rewiring, windows and doors, heating, dry lining and structural repairs. Since January 2025 it will not pay for a new oil or gas boiler.
Mobility Aids Grant
For older people or people with a disability, any age, for simpler mobility works. Maximum grant €8,000, up to 100% of the cost. One income limit, not a sliding scale.
| Gross annual household income | % covered | Max grant |
|---|---|---|
| Up to €37,500 | Up to 100% | €8,000 |
| Over €37,500 | Over the limit for this grant (the Housing Adaptation Grant may still cover the work) | |
Covers grab rails, ramps, accessible showers, stairlifts and hoists. A stairlift or hoist needs an Occupational Therapist report. VAT is not covered, but you can reclaim it separately from Revenue.
How to apply, and where we come in
All three grants use one shared local authority application form. You'll need proof of income, proof your Local Property Tax is paid, your tax affairs in order, contractor quotes, and for some works a doctor's section or an OT report. It's the same paperwork that stops a lot of people finishing the Housing Adaptation Grant.
You can do it yourself with the form and checklist below. Or we do the whole thing for you, start to finish, for a flat €169, payable only if you decide to go ahead.
