Kildare County Council has paused most new applications
Since 8 June 2026 the council is not taking new applications for the Housing Adaptation Grant or the Mobility Aids Grant, except Priority 1 and emergency cases.
Housing Aid for Older People has reached its limit for 2026. Only emergency works are accepted, such as a failed heating system or urgent electrical or structural repairs. The council asks everyone else to apply in January 2027.
Priority 1 cases are the most urgent: the person is terminally ill, depends mainly on a carer or family for care, or needs the work done to leave hospital or residential care. If that is you, contact the council now.
If your case is not urgent, you can still get your documents ready, but hold off on our kit until the council reopens. We will post it in our grant news when it does.

How to apply in Kildare — step by step

Kildare County Council grants for pensioners, stairlifts and bathrooms
When people look for Kildare County Council grants for pensioners, or housing grants from Kildare County Council, they usually mean three grants. Kildare County Council runs all three, and all three go in on the same application form.
- Housing Aid for Older People: up to €10,700 for homeowners aged 66 or over, for essential repairs and improvements such as heating, windows or rewiring.
- Mobility Aids Grant: up to €8,000 for a stairlift, grab rails, a ramp or a level-access shower, for household incomes up to €37,500.
- Housing Adaptation Grant: up to €40,000 for bigger work such as a through-floor lift, a downstairs bathroom or an extension, for household incomes up to €75,000.
These are also what people mean by home improvement grants for pensioners, or grants for disabled adaptations, in Kildare. There is no separate HSE stair lift grant in Kildare. The council pays the grant, and the HSE’s part is usually the occupational therapist report.
How long it takes in Kildare
Kildare County Council typically decides a complete application in about 6 to 10 weeks. Before that, most applicants need an occupational therapist report, and the HSE community OT wait for a non-urgent home adaptation referral in Kildare is usually 3 to 6 months. So ask your GP or public health nurse for the OT referral first.
